Scarlett
Garrett
When Scarlett and Garrett meet, tempers flare but passion runs high.
SCARLETT GIBSON is a shy, intimidated city girl. She is not a 10 more like a 6, can’t find a steady boyfriend and her sex life sucks. She leaves New York to take a sabbatical from work where she is overworked and mistreated. Her twin sister Charlotte has invited her to stay at their Grandpa Joe’s ranch in Canton, Texas.
GARRETT WRIGHT is a cowboy who rides bulls in the rodeo circuit. He is good looking, a big flirt and a heartbreaker; known to “Love ‘em and leave ‘em”. His dream is to be the nation’s top bull rider. He works on Grandpa Joe’s ranch for extra money to fund his rodeo travelling.
Excerpt from Chapter 2:
“Okay Sadie, now you stand still while I put this saddle on you.” Scarlett checks to make sure the bridle is knotted tightly on the post. She straightens the blanket on Sadie’s back one more time. “Here goes.” Puffing, she lifts the saddle on. “Good job girl.” Once she is satisfied all the straps are secured, she walks the horse out of the barn.
Placing her boot in the stirrup, she swings her leg up but can’t get it over. After the fourth try, she stomps her foot. I should have brought a bucket from the barn to stand on.
Garrett walks around the corner to see Scarlett stomping her foot. He watches as she tries to mount Sadie again. Oh this is entertaining. He grins as he leans against the side of the barn.
When Scarlett looks around for something to stand on, she sees a man next to the barn, chuckling and looking at her. “What are you laughing at?” She notices his dark hair curling at the nape of his neck and a mischievous twinkle in his blue eyes as he walks toward her. Gulping twice, Scarlett tries to compose herself as he gets closer. Good god he is damn fine! She looks from his chiseled face to broad shoulders, down the worn out t-shirt tucked into his tight jeans, on down to his crotch. She feels her cheeks heat up as she quickly looks back to his face.
Garrett sees the blush rise in her face. He notices her emerald green eyes and the freckles across her nose. Pretty, he thinks. “Need some help mounting Sadie? Seems to me you’re a little short to be trying to mount straight from the ground.”
Short? Raising an eyebrow, she crosses her arms. “I’m fine and can manage by myself.”
“The hell you can.” Garrett bends over placing his hands together. “Let me give you a boost.”
Huffing, Scarlett places her foot in his hands. She puts her weight on the foot, holds onto the horn and swings over her other leg. Before either of them realizes what’s happening, the saddle slips to the right and dumps her on the ground.
Garrett runs around to the other side of Sadie. “Are you okay? I should have checked the straps first.” He wants to laugh but holds it in when he sees the look of embarrassment on her face. He holds out his hand to help her up.
“Go ahead and laugh. I see you want to.” She slaps his hand away and gets up. “I think I’ll pass on riding today.”
He can see the anger in her eyes and they are a darker green as she looks at him. Garrett can’t help but laugh this time. “I’d hate to see you really mad. Your temper is probably worse than a Texas tornado.”
“If you’ll excuse me, I’ll take Sadie back to the barn.” She straightens the saddle and grabs the bridle. “Come on girl, we’ll try this again tomorrow.”
Garrett watches her ass as she walks to the barn. “Nice to meet you too.”

Scarlett is curled up on the sofa reading when she hears a truck pull into the yard. She goes outside to help bring in the groceries.
As Joe takes a 40 pound bag of potatoes off the bed, he turns and smiles at her. “What’s my girl been up to this afternoon?”
“Let’s just say it’s been an interesting afternoon, Grandpa. Will you show me how to tighten the straps on a saddle?”
“Sure I will.” Joe looks at her concerned. “Did something happen?”
“I fell off Sadie.” Scarlett laughs, feeling the embarrassment all over again.
“At least Sadie is a gentle mare. She doesn’t spook easily. After my nap, I’ll show you.”
When all the food is put away, Charlotte makes a pot of coffee, and then sits at the table across from Scarlett who is fingering the placemat. “What’s up sis? I can see something is bothering you.”
“I met one of the ranch hands today. I didn’t get his name.” Laughing nervously she continues, “I was so embarrassed, I forgot to ask. He was helping me on the saddle when I fell off. He’s tall, dark and …”
“That would be Garrett.” Charlotte gets up to pour a cup and sits back down. “I dated Garrett before I met Jake. He’s not your type and he doesn’t know how to be faithful. He’ll sure as heck break your heart.
“I gather he broke yours.”
“You could say that. Garrett and I remained friends since he works for Grandpa. Then I met Jake and the rest is history.”
“You’re right, not my type. When I settle down with someone, I want to be the only one he climbs into bed with every night.” She looks at the clock over the sink. “Grandpa should be up from his nap by now. Time for my lesson then I’m going to make the best pizza you’ve ever put in your mouth.”
“Okay, but no on the two-stepping. I want to blend in, not have everyone smirk at the city girl.”
* * *
As Scarlett places the supper dishes and utensils in the dish washer, she can’t help but think about Garrett and his rock hard body. Bet his ego is as big as this state. She starts the washer, leans against the counter and smiles to herself. Her New York-style sausage, cheese pizza, with a spinach salad and lager beer was a hit. Joe and Jake finished the pizza. Charlotte really like the lager and stated she wanted to get more for the barbecue Joe planned for Saturday. Jake mentioned all the ranch hands would attend as well as a few neighbors. This meant Garrett would be there too. Scarlett fixes a glass of sweet tea and takes the drink out on the back porch to sit on the swinging chair. The sun is setting across the fields, the bullfrogs are croaking near the creek, no honking cars or sirens to be heard. She realizes she doesn't miss the city. Looking out toward the pasture, she notices a figure walking into the barn. There’s no mistaking that body. Deciding she liked some company since everyone turned in early, perhaps a little friendly flirting, Scarlett strolls to the barn.
As she enters, her sharp intake of breath causes him to turn towards her. Garrett is shirtless; his muscles are pumped from vigorously soaping a saddle. Her eyes take in the dark hairs on his chest, the tight abs and the goody trail peeking above his belt buckle. Damn, why can’t I just look at his face?
Walking over to a stall, Scarlett stammers, “I didn’t think anyone was in here. I wanted to see Sadie before going to bed.”
“You know when you fall off a horse you should get right back on so you won’t be scared about riding.” Continuing to work the saddle, he glances her way.
“I’m not scared. It’s been a long time since I rode. I used to ride here all the time when I was younger.”
“I’m just saying…..” Garrett takes the saddle over to a rack and walks back over to lean on a stall across from her.
“You’re just saying what?”
He watches as her face becomes defiant as she places her hands on her hips and straightens her back. Damn sexy but temperamental. “Never mind.”
Huffing, Scarlett walks to the door then turns around. “Do you always have to be right or have the last word?”
Garrett chuckles. “That’s my name.”
“What is?”
“Garrett B Wright is my name. We weren’t formally introduced.”
“Well what does the B stand for? Brat?” Scarlett really pissed-off now, stomps off towards the house.
Laughing, he hollers out, “Well you don’t have to have a conniption fit!”
